Story
Hi there,
Adam and his mates will be walking for Adam’s son Liam, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour after more than 6 months of unexplained illness and several misdiagnoses. Mark, Chris, Troy, Michael, Shaun (Adam’s brother) and Tim (Liam’s Godfather) will be walking the 150km from the SCG to Newcastle with Adam for this year’s NRL Beanies for Brain Cancer round from 26th to 28th of June. They are walking for more awareness, earlier diagnosis, better treatments and ultimately a cure for all brain cancers.
The Big Three Trek weekend will mark just over 2 years since Liam’s diagnosis; confirmed to be a Medulloblastoma on his 6th birthday in 2024. What followed was 2 brain surgeries (the first of which left him unable to walk or communicate), 30 days of brain and spine radiation, and 4 months of high dose chemotherapy. Liam’s recent 12 month scan is thankfully clear and he is enjoying getting back to ‘normal’ life again, however his prognosis is uncertain, and the late effects of toxic treatments on his little body are already starting to show; both psychological and physical.
120 cases of brain cancer are diagnosed in children & adolescents in Australia each year. Brain cancer causes more deaths in children than any other type of cancer. Treatments are outdated, and toxic for kids who may survive the cancer but are then faced with an uncertain medical future. More awareness and research is needed into more effective, gentle, and targeted treatments for brain cancer patients of all ages.
Brain cancer kills more Australians under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Brain cancer receives less than 5% of federal government cancer funding which could explain why survival rates have only increased by 1% in 30 years. This is why we walk.
Please join us on our quest to make a difference!!
